Six Indoor Activities to Enjoy During the Winter Months

Happy senior couple watching TV at homeLet it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

You’ll recognize that classic holiday song. Written back in 1945, it’s one of the best-known tunes written about winter, and it’s become popular around the world. Here in Wisconsin, we probably relate best to some lyrics more than others, especially, “… It doesn’t show signs of stopping.” According to the National Weather Service, normal snowfall for January ranges from 25 to 30 inches across central and east-central Wisconsin to around 40 inches across the north.

Brrr! It can be challenging to spend most of the winter indoors when the weather outside is frightful. We just need to be extra creative about finding things to do until spring arrives. In fact, there’s a wide variety of indoor activities for seniors to beat the cold weather.

Six Indoor Winter Activities You’ll Love

  • Treat yourself to self-care. Brave the weather and indulge in some pampering at one of Wisconsin’s premier spas. From manicures to massages to mud baths, a spa day is one of those indoor activities for seniors that feels so good it shouldn’t be reserved just for the winter.
  • Take a trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum. Visit the museum in person or experience their incredible collections through their virtual resources on your computer. The Museum holds the largest collection of art by Wisconsin native Georgia O’Keefe and over 30,000 works from the 15th century to modern day. Browse the galleries and special exhibitions, shop art-inspired gifts, and explore your creative side.
  • Complete a new puzzle. Solving jigsaw puzzles ranks among the most popular indoor winter activities. Instead of taking a long winter’s nap, why not pick a challenging puzzle you’d usually not attempt? Some studies even show that puzzles can help keep your mind sharp, so you can both while away some time and get a good brain workout too.
  • Watch a favorite movie. Watching a movie about tropical islands and warm weather might be the perfect antidote to Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Pick a longtime favorite or spin the wheel and watch something new. Either way, grab a cozy blanket and a bowl of popcorn and settle down for a spell.
  • Learn a new skill. Many of us are lifelong learners — retirement shouldn’t change that. At Heritage, our life-enrichment calendar offers residents wonderful choices such as arts and crafts, baking, volunteerism, and more.
  • Maintain your fitness. Exercise is important all year long, at every age. Resist the temptation to let your efforts wane during the colder months when you can’t get outside. There are plenty of fun indoor activities to turn into exercise opportunities on your own, such as marching in place while you enjoy your favorite shows or taking a regular brisk walk around the community areas. We offer fitness sessions like Flex, Fit & Fun, and Wii gaming if you’d like something more social.
