Safe Summer Activities for Seniors

Happy senior couple enjoying a picnic outside during the summer.

Summer is here, and that means it’s time to find ways to take full advantage of those warm, sunny months. Not sure what to do, though? Even in a time where there is concern with the COVID-19 pandemic, there are plenty of ways for you to find happiness and entertainment while staying safe. Keep reading for a few ideas on how to spend your summer days.

7 Things to Do in the Summer

  1. Take a Walk
Walking is a great way to stay active, and you might as well take advantage of warm summer days while you can. Get some fresh air by walking around your neighborhood or exploring a local hiking trail. And for your safety, remember to wear masks when it’s not possible to stay socially distant from others.
  2. Garden
Not only is gardening a great hobby, it also results in something truly beautiful. For those who have a green thumb, tend to your garden and take part in the creation of fruits, vegetables and flowers. As a bonus, gardening also enhances your overall wellbeing by improving your physical, mental and spiritual wellness.
  3. Pick Up a New Hobby
Always wanted to try something that you’re interested in but have never quite had the time to do it? Well, now’s your chance! No matter where your enthusiasm lies, there’s something out there for you to turn into an engaging hobby. It could be knitting, photography, woodworking, dancing or anything else that piques your interest.
  4. Enjoy a Movie Night
Grab some popcorn and your favorite movies to unwind after a day in the sun. Whether you’re interested in a romantic comedy or find enjoyment in learning something new from a documentary, there are countless films for you to watch, either from a streaming service like Netflix or your own personal collection. As a special bonus, find a projector to use and enjoy an even bigger picture outside in the fresh air.
  5. Pack a Picnic
Enjoy a sunny day with this classic summertime activity. Grab a basket and pack some snacks, drinks and a blanket to lay on and head to your favorite spot to sit outside, whether it be at a park or even in your own backyard. Having a picnic gives you an opportunity to socialize with friends and family, even while practicing social distancing.
  6. Have a Staycation
Even though travel plans may have been canceled, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a vacation for yourself! While it may not be the same thing as experiencing another city or country for yourself, you’re still able to immerse yourself in a different culture. Try making a brand-new dish for dinner, splurge on decorations like lounge chairs or even tune in to the Travel Channel to see where they’ll take you.
  7. Go for a Dip in the Pool
Summer is definitely the time to get your feet wet! Swimming is a great low-impact exercise for seniors that includes benefits such as increased endurance and muscle strength, boosted heart health and an opportunity to socialize.
