Aim for a Healthy Lifestyle: How to Boost the Immune System

Senior couple sharing a healthy meal together.

Our immune system plays a vital role in our wellbeing by protecting our bodies against invaders such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. From the common cold to the current COVID-19 pandemic, our immune systems are given the task of defending our health. But how exactly do you make your immune system stronger?

While there are plenty of pills and supplements out there that claim to boost our immune systems, it’s a little more complex than that. The best course of action is to strengthen your immune system naturally as part of your daily routine.

5 Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System Naturally

  1. Regularly exercise. Not only does exercise aid in weight and muscle maintenance, it also helps to boost your immune system. For example, physical activity like walking or biking stimulates circulation, making it easier for immune cells to travel throughout the body.
  2. Eat a balanced diet. A balanced diet focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy. As with most bodily functions, a healthy and balanced diet is key to staying healthy and maintaining your immune system. Spinach, red bell pepper and citrus fruits are just a few examples of food that especially helps contribute to a healthy immune system.
  3. Stay hydrated. While it is generally recommended to drink 8 glasses of water a day, your needs may vary depending on activity levels and your body’s functions. Regardless of how much water you personally should drink each day, maintaining proper fluid levels helps to support your immune system. There is a fluid in your circulatory system called lymph which carries infection-fighting immune cells around your body and is largely made up of water.
  4. Sleep. It’s true – infection-fighting molecules are created when you sleep, leading to an even stronger immune system ready to protect your body. Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep a night for optimal wellness.
  5. Minimize stress. Stress takes a major toll on our body, including our immune system. The stress response in your body surprises your immune system and increases your chance of illness. Some stress release methods include yoga, meditation and reading a favorite book.

Signs of a Strong Immune System

While it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider when it comes to your overall health and wellness, there are a few signs you may notice when you have a stronger immune system. These signs include the following:

  • You’re able to manage stress and anxiety in a healthy way, either through meditation or another form of stress relief.
  • Your cycle of the common cold is in line with the average person. Usually, the average person catches about two or three colds a year and is able to bounce back in seven to ten days.
  • You have a healthy digestive tract.
  • Your skin works quickly to defend against damage, such as burns, cuts or scrapes.
  • You feel well-rested.
  • Your body successfully fights back against infections without you needing to seek emergency medical help.
