Local Officers and K-9 Team Honor Deer Creek Resident
Leonard Lalko spent years serving the residents of Milwaukee Country as an MPD officer. And the Heritage at Deer Creek resident still loves the force dearly. In fact, his hope was to be able to invite Milwaukee Police and the K-9 unit to a party to celebrate everything they do.
On April 28, Leonard got his wish – and more! Heritage at Deer Creek arranged for the New Berlin Police Department K-9 unit, along with Leonard’s friends and fellow veterans, to attend a celebration that also commemorated his 88th birthday! The festivities began with a proclamation by New Berlin Mayor Dave Ament and also featured a performance by a member of the Greater Milwaukee Fire and Police Pipes and Drums. Leonard even received a police-themed birthday cake for the occasion!
“We’re thrilled to be able to honor Mr. Lalko through our Heritage Hopes program. This is our first year of providing wishes to residents in our senior living communities throughout the state, and it’s a privilege to recognize someone like Leonard, who has given so much to his country and community,” said Connie Knapp, executive director of Heritage at Deer Creek.
The event also served as a fundraiser for the New Berlin K-9 team. Through the sale of grab-and-go lunches and raffle tickets, Heritage at Deer Creek raised over $1,000, which went toward feeding, training and caring for New Berlin K-9 dogs Askan and Condor.
“Supporting worthy causes in our community is an important part of what we do and making a donation to our local police department in this resident’s name is a great way to do just that,” said Connie.
