Holiday Activities to Do with Your Older Relatives This Holiday Season in Monona, Wisconsin

The holiday season is upon us and there’s no better time of year to get out and about to see and experience the festivities! Madison and the nearby suburb of Monona, WI, are wonderful every day of the year, but the month of December makes them extra-special!

Here are just some of the Madison and Monona holiday activities and events happening in December:

Wisconsin State Capitol Tree Lighting – Friday, December 3. Downtown Madison is already beautiful and vibrant, so our annual tree lighting is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season surrounded by all the excitement Madison has to offer.

A Madison Symphony Christmas – Friday, December 3 through Sunday, December 5. Get into the spirit of the season with the Madison Symphony Orchestra and special guest singers for this beloved yearly tradition. Contact the symphony for times and tickets, and arrive an hour early to sing along with carolers in the lobby before the show. And everyone sings in the glorious finale!

Shine On Madison – Running through December. A downtown Madison holiday celebration featuring a winter market covered in festive seasonal lights. Retailers will be welcoming all visitors who come downtown to enjoy shopping, the arts and the community.

The Art & Gift Fair at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art – Weekends until Sunday, December 12.  A diverse and changing mix of artists and makers will have you coming back every weekend to see more. You’ll be delighted by fine art painters, printmakers, photographers and jewelers. You’ll find ceramics, metals, wood, wearables, specialty foods and more. Come and visit and you’ll want to come back again to find something special and unique for everyone on your holiday gift list.

Madison’s 25th Annual Fair Trade Holiday Festival – Saturday, December 4.  Come to Monona Terrace  from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and enjoy this  showcase of vendors, all vetted to ensure their products are ethically and humanely produced. Satisfy all your gift-giving needs this year with the extra-special meaning of gifts of value provided by people with values! 

The Capitol Christmas Pageant – Sunday, December 5. This will  be the 97th year of the pageant. Two performances will be featured – the first at 4:15 p.m. and the second at 5:15 p.m. School choirs will sing, musicians will perform, and you can see the Capitol Tree. This event is free and open to the public.

The Valley View Mall Christmas Show – Friday, December 10 through Friday, December 24.Come experience the wonderful holiday shopping in LaCrosse, WI. You’ll have all the fun of vendor booth shopping while indoors. You can also walk the mall, visit the stores and see all the festive holiday decorations. 

The Holiday Gift and Craft Show – Saturday, December 11. The Fox Cities Exhibition Center in Appleton, WI, hosts vendors displaying and selling thousands of one-of-a-kind goods. Some handmade, some vintage. Great fun for anyone who loves crafts or finding unique holiday gift items.

A Christmas Carol Live On Stage – Saturday, December 11 through Thursday, December 23. A Madison favorite family tradition at the Capitol Theater at Overture Center. This classic Christmas story of hope and redemption is brought to life for the whole family to enjoy.

The Nutcracker Suite – Friday, December 17  through Sunday, December 26. Overture Hall features Madison Ballet’s annual production of this classic Christmas performance. A favorite tradition for all ages to behold, all accompanied by the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s famous music. This year features all-new choreography celebrating the ballet company’s 40th  year, making it a performance you’ve never seen before.

The Madison Night Market – Saturday, December 18.. From 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., downtown Madison will be bustling with this wonderful, family-friendly event. Visit shops, vendors, food trucks, street performers and more. The festive spirit and fun holiday crowd are sure to keep you in the holiday spirit.
